When owner and founder, Carl Merrill, decided to start Kingspoke in the Fall of 2017, he set out on an endeavour that would align his two interests: a deep passion for sailing and an obsession with problem solving. Over the past 10 years he worked and raced with some of the most elite programs in the United States. Previously, as Shop Manager at Gorilla Rigging, he developed the Gorilla Foil headfoil system as well as innovative rigging packages for several world champion programs.
Merrill has developed a keen eye for the art and science behind yacht racing. His holistic approach to the sport, informed by a lifetime of sailboat racing and an Ocean Engineering degree from the University of Rhode Island, has given him a unique perspective and insight into the dynamics of sailing Grand Prix Sailboats and what really happens on the water. He currently resides in Newport, Rhode Island, with his wife Kristen, their children Anna and Henry, their dog, Jerry, and their black cat, Joon.
